Abstract
Zlato je tisućama godina služilo kao novac pretežito zbog prednosti koju posjeduje u usporedbi sa ostalim oblicima robnog novca. Neke od prednosti zlata su su: malena težina, visoka vrijednost, prenosivost te stabilnost i trajnost. No, još jedna pozitivna stvar kod zlata je ta što je njegova količina ograničena te se zlatne kovanice nisu mogle kovati u neograničenim količinama. Zbog toga je imao veliko povjerenje javnosti te su ljudi svoje bogatstvo čuvali u zlatu u trezorima banaka. Pojava novog monetarnog sustava u 18. stoljeću temeljila se baš na zlatu te se fiksna vrijednost zlata ustanovila u terminima američkog dolara. Sa novim monetarnim sustavom kreće nova era svjetske ekonomije. Monetarne vlasti svake zemlje u sustavu zlatnog standarda fiksiraju cijenu zlata u terminima nacionalne valute i preuzimaju obvezu da kupuju ili prodaju zlato po toj cijeni. Na taj se način uspostavio fiksni odnos između nacionalnih valuta posredstvom njihovih fiksnih odnosa prema zlatu. Tijekom trajanja zlatnog standarda javljaju se tri najbitnija valutna sustava, a to su sustav zlatne valute sa zlatom u optjecaju, sustav zlatne valute na bazi zlatnih poluga te sustav zlatne valute na bazi zlatnih deviza. No, kao i ostali sustavi zlatni standard doživljava slom te ga većina država napušta tijekom Prvog svjetskog rata. Nakon toga, većina država se vraća zlatnom standardu jer im je odgovaralo vezivanje valuta uz zlato koje je uvijek imalo stabilnu vrijednost. Tijekom Velike Depresije, zlatni standard doživljava novi krah zbog velike nezaposlenosti i siromaštva.
Abstract (english)
For millennia, gold was used as a currency primarily because of its superior properties compared to other commodities: light weight, its sought-after status, transportability and durability. Moreover, the supply of gold is limited, making it quite valuable. People had faith in its value and therefore kept it in bank vaults. With the dawn of a new monetary system in the 18th century, gold was still used as the standard, being matched with the value of the US dollar. With this new system, a new era has dawned. The monetary branches of each country expressed the price of gold in their native currency and accepted the conditions to trade gold in said currency. By doing that, a fixed relationship was established between the national currency variants, where these currencies reflected the most realistic value of gold. During the gold standard era, three new currency systems emerged: Gold coin standard, gold bullion standard, gold exchange standard. However, as in all other systems, the gold standard failed and is abandoned after World War I. However, the majority of world states adopt the gold standard again. During the Great Depression, a new crash destabilizes the world with unemployment and poverty.
