In the dynamic and fast-paced world of retail, effective supply chain management is a key success factor. One increasingly prominent strategy within the field of supply chain optimization is so-called cross docking, which aims to simplify the flow of goods from suppliers to customers by minimizing or eliminating the need for storage. Cross docking represents a strategic approach in managing the supply chain of Konzum, one of the largest retail chains in Croatia. Cross docking is applied in Konzum through several steps that include inventory planning, receipt of goods, storage, consolidation and delivery. In charge of inventory control are personnel responsible for monitoring and planning inventory and procurement activities who also collaborate with the procurement department and logistics staff to ensure accurate and timely procurement of goods. When the truck arrives, the administration determines whether the truck's arrival is scheduled for that day and that it contains the planned receipt of goods so that they do not miss the cross docking terminal. During the unloading process, the goods are physically received, and the so-called controller carefully checks the condition, quantity and shelf life of the goods. After the goods have passed the necessary checks and a confirmation of receipt has been recorded, the next step in the process is storage. The warehouseman undertakes this key task, ensuring that the received goods are placed in the designated locations within the warehouse. When the goods arrive at the warehouse, they are sorted and grouped according to certain zones. These zones are strategically organized within the warehouse, taking into account factors such as product type, destination store or other relevant criteria. This sorting ensures that similar or related items are stored together, simplifying the distribution process later.
