The financial system is a significant indicator of the development of a country's economy, and includes financial markets, financial instruments and financial institutions, where financial intermediaries are most often observed under the item of financial institutions. Financial intermediaries indirectly collect funds from surplus sectors and place the funds thus collected on financial markets, in the form of financial instruments, and then transfer them further to sectors with a financial deficit. In this sense, intermediaries perform an economic function, which leads to a more efficient functioning of the financial system. The importance of financial intermediaries stems from the fact that they reduce a number of problems that can arise if individual investors appear directly in the financial market. It is therefore important to become familiar with the role and types of financial intermediaries that exist in the financial system. In this regard, financial intermediaries in the financial system of the Republic of Croatia can be divided into three main groups, among which depository institutions, contractual savings institutions and investment intermediaries stand out. Each of these groups includes certain institutions that are considered financial intermediaries, and each of them occupies a different share in the financial system of the Republic of Croatia. In order to indicate possible changes in the structure of financial intermediaries and the adequacy of the existing structure of intermediaries to the economic situation in the Republic of Croatia, in this paper were analyzed the number of financial intermediaries, their total assets expressed as a percentage of gross domestic product, investment structure of intermediaries and the ratio of financial and credit intermediation. All the above variables were compared in relation to selected developed countries of the European Union in order to conclude whether the structure of intermediaries in the Republic of Croatia follows trends in more developed countries of the European Union.
