The financial system has a significant impact on the development of a country's economy and the most important role in its implementation is played by financial intermediaries. The role of financial intermediaries is to transfer funds from sectors that have a financial surplus to sectors that have a financial deficit, so that the financial system functions better. The financial system of the Republic of Croatia is traditional, i.e. it is dominated by deposit institutions – banks. There are several important types of risk to which intermediaries are exposed: credit risk, market risk, operational risk and liquidity risk. In order to show the impact of the banking risks, an analysis of two banks (Zagrebačka banka d.d. and Privredna banka Zagreb d.d.) was conducted. The aim of the work was to analyze the risks of banking operations and their impact on the business. In addition, it was important to highlight certain risk-related obstacles faced by banks and resulting from the scope of the bank's business itself. Based on the available data from the annual financial reports, it was found that among all risks, credit risk ranks first, followed by liquidity risk, while market risk is the least represented. In addition, it is very important to ensure secure transactions, as unsuccessful transactions promote customer distrust of banks. Looking at the individual results for each bank over a three-year period, it can be seen that banks have a clearly defined policy that achieves a positive direction of movement with its regular controls and protective instruments.
