Last century was marked by an accelerated development of cities, relatively by the process of urbanization. Uncontrolled development of cities leads to a new, unknown problems. One of the most prominent is violated balance between constant growth of material and preservation and survival of the environment, natural basis of living and survival of society. Hence the above mentioned, there is need for sustainable urban development as a precondition to create sustainable city. The principles, on which the sustainable development of a city relies, refer to the preservation on the environment, social and cultural sustainability and efficient infrastructure, mutual interaction of all participants in the decision-making process and fostering innovation and creativity within the framework of sustainable development. Basic hypothesis of this thesis is how sustainable cities through economic growth and efficiency, care about the environment and providing an adequate quality of life, contribute to the implementation of sustainable development. The main goal of this is testing and establishment of the possibility of applying basic indicators of sustainable development in the cities. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the quality of life of citizens in cities applying the principles of sustainable development. Since a matter of sustainable development and strengthening awareness about it, is equally important as when we speak about the survival of civilization, this topic is extremely extensive so this thesis provides insight only to certain elements.
