Electronic learning or e-learning is a way of gaining skills and competencies by distance learning. Owing to technological development, distance learning has become a global necessity, which has, due to its advantages, become not only a part of every individual's daily life, but a part of society as a whole as well. Precisely because of its wide applicability and simplicity, elearning is an integral part of education that is able to be attained by means of digital technologies and the internet. In this paper, a complete summary of the fundamentals of elearning, its applications in the education system, along with all of the elements enabling its use in daily life will be covered. By using e-learning platforms, such as Coursera, edX, Udemy or Loomen, users attain the knowledge necessary for their chosen future profession. Although the previously-mentioned platforms boast many advantages, such as temporal and spatial flexibility, they also possess disadvantages which impact the learning process. Some of said disadvantages are: program cybersecurity, financial limitations, absence of authority, publication inauthenticity, etc. In Croatia, electronic learning was implemented into the educational system in 2015. in order to develop a digitally-mature society. The most widely used e-learning platform is CARNET Loomen, which has become an integral part of contemporary grade school and university student education. By using Loomen, students can access all necessary learning materials, as well as a carefully-designed curriculum. E-learning represents the foundation of an individual's development and their need for the attainment of new knowledge and skills.
