As digitalization continues to encompass various aspects of human life, it also affects money and payment methods. This paper will describe the development of online payment methods throughout history and explain different forms of online payments. Additionally, it explores the security aspect of online payments, highlighting the main technologies used for payment security. In recent years, there has been a rise in the use of digital currencies and cryptocurrencies. This paper defines both concepts and emphasizes the difference between digital currencies and cryptocurrencies. The historical background and origins of cryptocurrencies are explained, along with how cryptocurrencies can be acquired. Furthermore, notable cryptocurrencies are highlighted, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of this paper is to describe all the aforementioned payment forms and, in the empirical part, examine whether debit cards are the most prevalent form of online payment, whether respondents trust online payment methods or cash more, and whether cryptocurrencies will completely replace cash in the future. Based on the research conducted for the purpose of writing this paper, it can be concluded that mobile banking is the most widely used form of internet payment among the respondents. Although cash is not the most prevalent means of payment, the participants expressed that they trust cash the most as a payment method. When examining attitudes towards cryptocurrencies, the respondents indicated that they do not believe cryptocurrencies will completely replace cash in the future.
